  • Spacious and grassy site on the banks of the River Trent
  • Watersports centre and several theme parks a short drive away
  • Riverside walks and bike rides, boat trips and restaurants nearby
Shoot along for a stay here… you'll have enough to do in scenic surrounds to keep you occupied for aeons. Gunthorpe Camping is a small family-friendly site set on a level grassy paddock next to the River Trent, making it most handy for riverside walks and bike rides direct from the grounds, and canoeing, kayaking, fishing and boat trips all nearby. There's also the National Watersports Centre and Sundown Adventureland within 40 minutes' drive… and when you're tuckered out and back at base, several good bars and restaurants are within a short stroll. The grassy paddock is open and surrounded by hedges and mature trees, so you'll have plenty of space to spread out as well as hunker down when the mood takes you. You should have a peaceful and comfy stay here too: the grounds are well-maintained and the showers in the bright clean washrooms have plenty of hot water. Barbecues are allowed, so it's all systems go if you want to grill up an alfresco feast by the riverbank.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Great location, ground drained really well so even though weather wasn’t great the site wasn’t muddy. Owners quick to respond to any questions. Good pub next door that was dog friendly. Cows in next field were considerate neighbours lol.

Disliked: Water pressure in shower was poor. But we’re clean and not on those stupid buttons

Electric grass pitch

Liked: This is absolutely my kind of site. Small, quiet. no fuss. Very well maintained. Loo facilities provided all that was required. I actually liked just having the code for the front gate and not having to wait to be met by a member of staff. I did have a contact telephone number if I had needed to speak to someone. Walking both ways along the river is lovely, even in the horrible drizzle we had to put up with. Had food from the local Indian delivered which was very convenient and very yummy. Will definitely be back, especially with the bonus of the site only being 1/2 an hour from home.

Disliked: Absolutely not the sites fault, but I was disappointed with the pub next door. Its one of those family, chain type places. Perfect if thats your thing but its absolute;y not mine. Was hoping for e few pints but had one and left.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Gunthorpe Camping is an excellent site. Two flat grass fields. Good facilities. Close to The Unicorn Pub with great food. Next door to Tom Browns, an up market restaurant. 100yards away from best Indian restaurant and takeaway in the country. The fab river Trent is just across the road with all the boating and boarding available. Cycling along the river bank all the way to Nottingham if you wish. Half a mile away from Lowdham’s, probably the best caravan centre in the midlands. Just can’t be beaten. Trust me. Try it.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Communication with Lesley (Owner) regarding Checking in etc was good and the Couple who greeted us on site were very helpful and informative. They had Lived in Gunthorpe and knew the area very well, enabling them to provide useful, relevant information & advice. Location, Security, Pitch Size, Site Layout, Socialising area & Washup area were all very good. We will definitely go back.

Disliked: Very small Toilet & Shower Block, only one Male toilet, urinal, Sink and Shower no chair provided. The same for the Female side but there was a chair in there. The facilities that were there were very good, lots of hot water, very clean & fresh. I have to say this was not a problem at the time we were staying as the Site was not very busy, only four pitches being used by couples. If the site were full with families too this would be a problem. There were two Fridges provided for communal use, good idea, however they desperately needed defrosting and cleaning we were unable to use them. If a small freezer were provided Campers would be able to freeze their own Blocks to go in Cool Boxes, exchanging them each day.

Liked: Lots of space and very casual setup. Great location.

Disliked: Bathroom facilities not kept clean. Pretty grim. Only 1 shower Sinks and toilets not cleaned from Saturday to Wednesday. So disappointing.

From the manager: Christine….this is so unfair, you were hardly on-site..so how you can you know when the facilities were cleaned. 6 out of 10 for accommodation, that’s your tent? we only supplied you a grass pitch. We have 3 showers so I’m not sure if your reviewing the correct site?

Friendly owners and superb location.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: I really lovely simple campsite of two fields with apple trees, picnic tables, ducks and guinea fowl. The kitchen was all we needed with sinks, fridges, power supply and a couple of sofas. The bathrooms were the real winner - two nice toilet cubicles in the ladies and a shower room, but it was heated!! So nice in the morning to go into somewhere warm. As a woman travelling on her own with a child I also really appreciated the secure gates that could only be opened with a code. The river walk just outside the gate was lovely too.

Local attractions

Despite the industrial past and present, Nottinghamshire has many fab natural landscapes: the wetlands at Skylarks Nature Reserve, a 20-minute drive from the site are as rich with feathered life as any you'll see on TV nature channels. For more adventurous hours, there's go-karting 15 minutes' drive away in Netherfield, and a massive array of high octane stuff (not all of it watery) at the National Watersports Centre (20 minutes' drive) including Segway rides, high ropes, wakeboarding and rafting. Then there's Sherwood Forest and Sherwood Forest Pines Park 40 minutes away… a leafy combination of legend, history, nature reserve, country park and adventure centre, with hiking and biking trails through 450 acres of ancient oaks and wildlife. Adventureseekers can see it from the treetops on ropes and wires at Go Ape, and the kids can clamber about at the award-winning natural play area Robin Hood’s Hideout. For family antics out of the forest, Sundown Adventureland (40 minutes) has rides and themed playgrounds for the under-10s; Twinlakes Park offers birds of prey shows and creepy critters along with its waterpark and rollercoaster rides, and for the real big-ride fanatics, it's an hour and a half to Alton Towers. It's half an hour to Nottingham for tours of the castle and the caves, stopping for snifters in Ye Trip To Jerusalem and ice skating at Motorpoint Arena. You could also hire bikes for a trip through Colwick Country Park (20 minutes' drive), a pleasant combo of woodlands, lakes, meadows and playgrounds where you can swim, fish, walk, sail and spot wildlife.
