General

  • Small friendly site 13 miles from Lincoln
  • Level and well-drained site
  • On the Ermine Way and the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Trail

What a handsomely historic location has the hamlet of Byards Leap – for it's between ancient Lincoln and the old market towns of Sleaford, Newark and Grantham; is on an aged Roman road, and is the setting of ye olde Byards Leap legend dating back centuries (Byard was a high-jumping horse, in case you're wondering). And the Knights Templar used to hang out around here too.

Folks use The Beeches campsite in the hamlet as a base to explore historic Lincolnshire or as a stopover enroute to Norfolk or the east coast: plenty of history around in those there parts too. It's a small and friendly site, level, grassy and well drained, with rather nice views over Lincolnshire farmland; access to the Ermine Way is straight from the site.

The Beeches has a play area and disabled-friendly amenities a few steps from the pitching area. It's next to the Byards Leap café which dishes up excellent breakfasts and lunches from Thursday to Sunday; a handful of good pubs and restaurants is within a five-mile radius too.

Dogs are welcome at The Beeches – we recommend old Roman road Ermine Street for walks...

Please note

A charge of 10p per minute applies for the use of shower.

Great site, good facilities, friendly and eager hosts 18/07/2018

  • Liked:

I liked how it was run, Friendly and relaxed, no nonsense and straight to the point, all facilities available and well maintained.
It was up-and-coming, with a few things that needed looking at, but it was obvious to me that they were being looked into and will be improved upon. Looking forward to improvements and innovations of the future.
Well worth the money and very pleasant experience.

    Disliked:

It is on a main A road - obviously this is not the fault of the proprietors, and it was not a problem, only a minor inconvenience (as it is nice to have peace and quiet while camping).
Field itself was stony under the surface, so for camping heavy duty pegs and a proper mallet are a must.
Signal black spot and no wifi available.

The friendliness of the staff and the little touches they have added to make our stay very welcoming. On arrival we were offered a cup of tea or coffee in the office (never had that offered before) and they provided a huge screen in a marquee for anyone to watch the Football Quarter finals - not something we wanted to see but a really nice touch for those who did attend.
Really good grass surface that was kept immaculate, clean shower block, plenty of bins around.

    Disliked:

Just the proximity to the busy A17. It didn't keep us awake but the traffic noise was always in the background
We were there in the very unusual heat wave and it would have been a nice touch to provide a small freezer just to re freeze cool blocks as there isn't any electric hook up in the camping field

From the manager...

Hi,

Thank you for your nice comments.
We are currently looking into purchasing a fridge freezer with cold water and ice dispenser.

Regards
Shaun

Local attractions

Pick up details of local walks, cycle routes and town maps as well as leaflets and tourist info on site: there's quite a bit to do all around. A mix of quiet roads and bridleways linking the area's Lincolnshire villages means there's quite a bit to see if you want to get around by foot, pedal or horse.

As well as being on the Ermine Way, The Beeches is also on the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Trail and is close to the RAF Cranwell Heritage Centre and the Newark Air Museum. The Newark Showground is nearby too for shows, displays and events.

Plenty more history is at Lincoln – see the castle and cathedral if you only have time for two things – and at nearby National Trust properties like Grantham House and Tattershall Castle.

Or take trips around Lincolnshire's old towns, like Sleaford, a market town since the twelfth century; Grantham, where Isaac Newton went to school, and Newark, besieged by the roundy-headed ones in the English Civil War.
