“Da dunes run run run, da dunes run run” - for miles, in fact, on the massive stretch of uncrowded beach at Golden Sands Holiday Park (sing it loud, with all that lovely space it won’t be a problem to find a spot where nobody can hear you...).
Our heart stood still when we saw the array of family activities on offer at this fun-packed Haven site in Mablethorpe. Golden Sands Holiday Park has something for everyone, from dodgems, a high ropes course and go karting for the gilded youth, to more leisurely pursuits for golden oldies, such as cycling, archery and fishing (the two coarse fishing lakes are well stocked with bream, carp and the like).
There are spacious indoor and outdoor pools (both with super-whizzy flumes that will put the kids in a spin), all sorts of exciting activities in the free children’s clubs, trampolines, bouncy castles, crazy golf, bowling and much more. Many of these activities come free; for others, you’ll need to pay a moderate fee (usually £5 or £6 - for best value, buy a “pay as you go” Activity Pass when you book).
The buzz continues into the evenings, with non-stop free entertainment in the Live Lounge, including music, cabaret and comedy. Whenever you need a pit stop, there’s a good range of restaurants on site: a café bar and grill, a fish and chip shop, and a pizza place.
All in all, a golden opportunity for an action-packed family holiday...
Nearby attractions and activities
Right on the doorstep is the Mablethorpe Seal Sanctuary, which has exotic and predatory birds, chinchillas and genets as well as the rescued seals (guests can also see a large colony of wild seals at nearby Donna Nook). Mablethorpe is a classic British seaside resort with a fun fair, boating lake and miniature railway, as well as a regular farmers’ market (other good options for markets include Alford and Lincoln).
For more seaside fun, try lively Skegness - just outside is Fantasy Island theme park, with rides and amusements for all weathers - or Cleethorpes, where you can pick up the steam railway for an atmospheric journey along the shoreline, and find other exciting rides for all ages, including some screaming white knuckle affairs, at the Pleasure Island Theme Park.
For more natural thrills, make for the Lincolnshire Wolds (one of the country’s certified Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty), or the large nature reserve at Gibraltar Point, near Skegness - it’s home to a wide range of sea birds, and the massive over-wintering populations frequently offer a dramatic spectacle. Or you could simply enjoy the splendour of the Lincolnshire coastline and picturesque seaside villages such as Moggs Eye, Saltfleetby and Crook Bank.
Finally, the historic city of Lincoln is well worth a visit for a gawp at the stunning cathedral that dominates the skyline (take a rooftop tour - free for kids under five - for a spell-binding view across the surrounding countryside). There’s also a Norman Castle to explore, plus museums, galleries and shops.

Great place for young families ludewyk (Family with older children, 1 review, 2 photos)
Liked: Hard standing pitches were superb, loads of room. Waste water, Fresh water & electricity all on the pitch. We had an awning, 4m windbreak & a 5m windbreak plus our V50 Volvo and there must have been at least 20ft between pitch sites. Disliked: Showers- Men's scalding & Women's ice cold (Baltic my wife said). |

Great family holiday vickylouisebrettrobinson (Family with young children, 1 review, 0 photos)
Liked: Good range of facilities for the entire family. The kids enjoyed the free soft play area. Disliked: It was extremely windy & got quite cold at night. I was surprised that we needed warm jumpers due to the cold wind! |
