  • In the grounds of a 19th-century country house
  • Static caravan accommodation in a woodland setting
  • Club complex with licensed bar; fishing lake; forest trails
A Hereford holiday spot with a difference is what awaits at Saltmarshe Castle Caravan Park near Bromyard, as it's been set up in the grounds of Saltmarshe Castle, a former country house dating back to 1895. (The castle has been no more since 1955, but part of the outer walls, turrets, outbuildings and stables still remain: have a hol here to imagine you're some sort of swashbuckling adventurer.) Saltmarshe is in a peaceful woodland setting two and a half miles from the market town of Bromyard, on 67 acres of elevated and gently sloping south-facing land. Accommodation is in static caravans, many of which have spectacular views over the surrounding countryside. Facilities include a club complex with licensed lounge bar, evening entertainment and a games room; a fully-stocked shop and a bar and restaurant. If you're more of an outdoorsy sort, a fishing lake and a recreation field are also on site, along with trails into the forest for early morning woodland walks. Several farms, many selling locally grown fresh produce and ingredients, are in the area, along with garden centres, family restaurants with homemade food and gift shops selling arts and crafts.

Local attractions

This is land known for its spectacular landscapes as well as its ancient towns and cities, like Hereford, Worcester, Gloucester and Leominster. To the west lies the Borders region of Wales, famed for its black and white villages; sticking to Herefordshire, the 40-mile Black and White Village Trail is doable by car or bike. Saltmarshe Castle Caravan Park's local town of Bromyard is also a historically good spot, for its half-timbered buildings (including several pubs, huzzah) and a parish church built in Norman times. A large archive, a library and an exhibition room are open three days a week in the centre run by the knowledgeable sorts at Bromyard & District Local History Society. Wildlife watching and walks are at the nearby Knapp and Papermill Nature Reserve and among the 123 woodland acres of Queenswood Country Park and Arboretum, while more of the same plus mountain bike trails, horse riding and a Go Ape are north of Kidderminster at the Wyre Forest.
