  • A 10-minute drive to Peak District National Park
  • Fishing lakes and local pubs a 15-minute walk away
Head to High Ashes Haven for a sniff of history: this site is part of a farm dating back to 1640. The staff might have had rather more spartan berths back then, but in the comfy digs here you'll feel just as close to nature (the farm's pet sheep may wander by, but you won't have to do any tending these days, just wave hi as they amble past). The units here are warm and brightly decorated spaces with a cosy bed, with linen, towels and a goose feather and down duvet all provided. Right next door is a bathroom with hot shower, toilet and sink. For eats, cook up a feast in the well-equipped kitchen area or sling a pizza into the woodfired oven. Logs are supplied for the firepit too so you can toast yourselves as you dine alfresco: peak relaxation. It's thirsty work of course, all that gazing at the scenery… Handily, the hostelries of Ashover dish up local ales (and home-cooked dinners should you tire of prepping meals), a 15-minute walk or a five-minute drive away. And if that local scenery looks a tad familiar to film buffs? That may well be because the area's used as the location for 2019 hit movie Mary Queen of Scots.

Serenity bell tent

Liked: We had already fallen in love with High Ashes from the photos online, but my daughter said it was even better than she had imagined! We loved how all of the spaces were so thoughtfully curated. We stayed in the Serenity Bell Tent and Shepherd’s Hut. Everything was very functional as well as aesthetic. We especially loved the pizza oven (thank you, Phil for the cooking tips!) and the kids loved all the farm animals, especially the pigs, Bliss and Betty. We got lucky with the weather and got to enjoy the campfire and a nice countryside walk from the site. On the way out we visited Ashover Rock. Our group ranged from over 70 to under 10 years old, and the varied spaces made it a wonderful retreat for all. We are already looking forward to our next stay! Thank you so much Phil and Ness.

Disliked: Nothing. Everything was spot on and Phil was amazing.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: The Shepherd's Hut was super cosy even in freezing January weather and decorated beautifully. The outdoor kitchen was really well stocked and the loo & shower was clean and comfortable. We made pizzas in the pizza oven and played Trivial Pursuit by candle light, the whole experience was idyllic. The hosts were super friendly and helpful, we will absolutely be back!

Serenity bell tent

Liked: We had a wonderful stay at High Ashes Haven. The location is so peaceful, whilst also within a 8-10 minute drive to local supermarket which was handy. The Serenity bell tent was perfect for us, our older children stayed in the small tent for the first night, and we all slept in the main tent the second. Everything you need was provided, bedding, towels, all the kitchen equipment you could need, a dedicated fridge n the shared kitchen space, as well as a private outside kitchen area near to the tents, logs provided even a cafetière and ground coffee for a morning coffee with a view. The beds were comfy and cozy even during the chilly nights. Phil welcomed us as soon as we arrived, a really nice fella, providing helpful information about the local area, making us feel welcomed as soon as we got there. He was helpful, and just a text away if we needed anything (we didn’t) which was the perfect balance of helpful but providing us with space and privacy. Absolutely spot on. The children were invited to feed the pigs with Phil, and excited to feed the ducks as they pleased. We took a walk to the village, approx a 45 minute walk for us with the kids (would be shorter for adults) through the fields which was very peaceful. The shower and toilet were spotlessly clean, with a rustic charm. This place was perfect for our needs, and we really liked the community project that is run here too. Thank you Phil and Ness for being great hosts and for the wonderful stay.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike.

Haven bell tent

Liked: What a beautiful quirky campsite, lovely and clean facilities, lovely owners, lovely views! It's a hidden gem. Lovely decorated tent, comfy beds, kitchen was fully furnished, no need to bring your whole kitchen lol. All you need it's yourself, clothes and food. Not too far from local supermarket. There was plenty of activities for the children to play with, children could explore and knew they were safe! Can't wait to go back again.

Disliked: None!

Shepherd's hut

Liked: High Ashes Haven is a really special place - we had a wonderful time staying there and hope to go back again soon! The location is idyllic, surrounded by beautiful countryside. The facilities are clean, practical and so nicely decorated - we especially loved the fairy lights on the fences and along the jetty so that the pond looks really pretty even after the sun goes down. The Shepherd's Hut was so cosy and comfortable. Host Phil couldn't have been more warm, welcoming or helpful, and gave us some excellent recommendations of local places to visit. Highly recommended.

Local attractions

You can join up with the 34-mile Chesterfield Round Walk right from the site for a circular tour of southern Peaks countryside (it's split into sections with parking and bus links if you want to take it easy). A 10-minute drive takes you to the Peak District National Park, crisscrossed with walking and cycling trails for all levels of fitness or heroism. Even if you only make it down to Ashover for a pie and a pint, you'll see some classic countryside, so bring your camera along wherever you roam. Fishing enthusiasts can follow the stream out of the farm for a mile to Press Manor Lakes, where there's coarse and fly fishing for trout and carp as well as fishing lessons for those who want to hone their angling technique. Family days out nearby include Gulliver's Kingdom (15 minutes' drive), a dinosaur-studded theme park with log flumes and courage-testing rollercoasters. It's also worth taking the cable car from Matlock up to the Heights of Abraham, a hilltop park where you can venture into massive underground caverns or climb and swing in adventure playgrounds. Within a half-hour drive, you can see how the other half lives (or lived) at the historic estates of Chatsworth, Haddon Hall and Bolsover Castle. If you fancy galloping across the hills like country squires meanwhile, there's horse riding and pony trekking at Matlock Farm Park (10 minutes from the site).
